We all know the feeling. You crack open a fresh booster pack, shift past the commons, and there it is: a gleaming, beautifully illustrated copy of your absolute favorite character. Maybe it is a Pokémon you have loved since the Game Boy Color era, or a legendary Magic: The Gathering creature with the most incredible, lore-accurate flavor text you have ever read. If only Hans had listened...

There is just one tiny problem: the card is objectively terrible.

It is over-costed, has no synergy with the current meta, and playing it in a tournament setting is a mathematical death sentence. But what do you do? You sleeve it up anyway. You stubbornly build an entire 60-card list around it. You declare, against all logic and reason, that you are going to make it work. Shoutouts to C.J. for that Lucario victory!

The Lure of the "Pet" Card

At the highest levels of competitive play, trading card games are exercises in cold, hard efficiency. Players painstakingly calculate probability, optimize their mana curves, and rely on proven, top-tier decklists to secure victories.

But for the vast majority of us, the hobby is driven by emotion. We get attached to the art (my personal favorite is the foil Diabolic Tutor). We get invested in the lore (I bought just about every MTG novel back in the day). A "pet card" is that one deeply sub-optimal piece of cardboard you refuse to cut from your deck simply because you love it. Sure, you could play the hyper-efficient, tournament-winning Charizard ex build, but what if you just really want to win with a very sleepy Snorlax? Playing a jank deck is a rebellion against the meta. It's a declaration that you are playing for the love of the game, not just the win rate.

The Joy of the Puzzle

There's a distinct type of craftsmanship that goes into building a non-meta deck. Net-decking a proven list is easy, but attempting to assemble a cohesive strategy entirely out of bulk commons in a format like Pauper?

That's an art form.

Jank players are the mad scientists of the tabletop ecosystem. They're the ones ignoring a guaranteed, simple victory just to see if their ridiculous, six-card, highly improbable Rube Goldberg machine of a combo will finally trigger. 90% of the time, the deck fizzles out completely. But that other 10%? When the stars align, the combo goes off, and you somehow defeat a top-tier deck using a handful of bulk cards from five years ago...?

That feeling is better than winning the MTG Pro Tour or Pokémon World Championship which is coming up in late August.

High-level, competitive play is a vital and thrilling part of our community. But for a local game store to truly thrive, there needs to be a sanctuary for the weird, the wild, and the wonderfully sub-optimal. We need spaces where players can test out their most convoluted homebrews without being punished by turn-three infinite combos.
