MTG x The Hobbit: Mechanics, Chase Cards, and Combos

The journey of Thoren Oakenshield's company continues right here in Sandusky. If you remember the incredible energy our community brought to the Tales of Middle-earth release, you know exactly why we are so excited for MTG x The Hobbit. This highly anticipated set takes us back to simpler (though no less perilous times), focusing entirely on Bilbo's unexpected journey, the homesick dwarves, and the threat sleeping under Erebor - the Lonely Mountain.

Even Planeswalkers from distant realms like Clyde are invited to upgrade their favorite Commander deck, or hunt for pristine singles to have graded. We want to make sure you are prepared for an epic journey, so here is a quick guide on what to look out for when the set drops at The POP! Shop.

Mechanics to Master

When you step into Mirkwood or brave the peaks of the Misty Mountains, you need the right tools to survive. This set brings back some of our absolute favorite mechanics while introducing a few new twists.

Naturally, Food tokens are making a massive return. You cannot have a set featuring Hobbits without a nod to second breakfast! Look for incredible synergies that turn your Food tokens into card draw, lifegain, or sudden combat buffs. It is a slow, steady mechanic that perfectly fits the cozy nature of the Shire.

Additionally, the Adventure mechanic is back in full force. This allows you to cast a spell from a creature card before sending that actual creature onto the battlefield later. It is a fantastic way to generate two-for-one value in your drafts and perfectly captures the narrative of leaving home to face the unknown. Finally, expect to see a literal mountain of Treasure tokens. The Dwarven faction heavily relies on sacrificing Treasure to trigger massive damage effects or to cheat out heavy artifacts early in the game.

Chase Cards and Epic Combos

Every new Magic release brings a fresh wave of highly sought-after cards, and MTG x The Hobbit is no exception. The undisputed king of the set is the Gleaming Gold variant of Smaug, the Magnificent. This mythic rare dragon is an absolute powerhouse in the air and generates Treasure tokens every time it attacks. If you pull one of these, you have immediately secured the centerpiece for a devastating Commander deck and a crown jewel for your collection.

For those looking for clever combos, keep an eye on Bilbo, Master Burglar. His unblockable mechanics pair beautifully with equipment cards, allowing you to slip past enemy lines and trigger on-hit effects. Combine him with Sting, the Glowing Blade, and you can easily take down even the toughest Orc tokens on the board. We are also seeing a lot of hype around Thorin Oakenshield, who offers a massive anthem effect to all Dwarves on the board as long as you control at least five artifacts.
